Folks, I am trying to put a Ford 1710 back in working condition. The wiring is a mess due to squirrels and previous owners. Most of the rewiring seems to be pretty straightforward, but I have run into something I can't figure out. There is a black wire dangling from the start relay connector block. The wiring diagram shows that black wire running from the start relay to something called a "safety start switch." What is the safety start switch, and where is it located? Thanks

Or maybe even a magnetically operated switch mounted on a PC board inside the transmission, with wire out back?

OP, it's the same deal as the neutral safety switch in a car with an auto transmission; it will only allow the starter to crank when it's in neutral or park.

That entire starter control circuit is a series type; the power has to go thru the ignition switch, neutral safety, starter relay, before it will engage the solenoid to crank the engine. So look on the transmission or trans linkage for a spring loaded switch that the plunger is depressed when the trans is in neutral.

Maybe these will be helpful:#25 is switch & on schematic they call it a PC board.

I'm sorry, I let the other respondent's mention of 1700 get into my mind & gave you info on that, not your 1710.

Looks like there are several variations of 1710. Can you offer any thing further to ID your particular tractor?

Sorry to be slow responding - been out of town. My 1710 appears to be a late production model, i.e., July 1985 or after. I say that because my tractor has a fuel level sender and fuel gauge. The wiring diagram for the earlier models doesn't show those. Thanks for working on this.

JOMR, thanks for the tip. I can't check it right now-all dressed up to go to dinner- but will in the morning.

I looked and looked around the bell housing but can't find anything like what JMOR described. Maybe I didn't properly understand the description. Any other suggestions?
Thanks, jimbr

Well if it is like the 1700 I have worked on from time to time it is likely to be one of the switches like for the gear box or clutch pedal etc. I do not remember what all they have for safety switches but I know it has at least one if not more

Yes, That is what I assume also, but I can't find any mention of it in the owner's manual. I would like to connect the wire to its proper place.

Owners manuals now days do not tell you much when it comes to things like safety switches etc. You need to find a shop type manual for it that if your lucky will show you a wiring diagram
